Arboreal News: Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’
The Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’ is a smaller kind of Southern Magnolia that grows slowly and only reaches about 25 to 30 feet in height.
Though this cultivar has been bred in more recent times, Magnolias have been around since the Mesozoic Era when dinosaurs walked the Earth. This hardy species is easy to care for, and has a moderate drought resistance, but requires extra water in windy conditions.
Currently these trees are blooming in San Francisco withmagnificent white blossoms that are hard to miss against large, leathery, dark green leaves. If you get a chance, take a whiff of their sweet fragrance.
A great place to see the blossoms this month is at 299 Cole Street, by the Panhandle.
