Thanks to Elizabeth Olson on the Excelsior Parents list for this update.
In its initial creation of neighborhood elementary school assignment patterns, the San Francisco Public School District considered Interstate 280 to be an impenetrable barrier – forgetting that there are several pedestrian overpasses and underpasses that allow children to walk to schools on the north side of the freeway.
Enough parents wrote in to make that point that the map has been redrawn, with more of the Mission Terrace neighborhood feeding to Monroe as well as extending Glen Park’s attendance area to account for the overpasses and underpasses that allow us to easily walk over to Glen Park.
While the district hasn’t released a real updated map, but here’s a screen shot of the new areas:
Originally, families that lived in north Mission Terrace were assigned to Hillcrest Elementary which feeds into Visitacion Valley Middle School. But for many of them, Glen Park and other schools were actually closer because of the multiple pedestrian bridges over 280.
