On a slushy and muddy Saturday morning, 12 volunteers planted scores of native plants on Billy Goat Hill.
Stretching from Laidley Street to Beacon Street, natives such as California Sage, Sticky Monkey Flower and Yarrow now complement a trail and hardwood steps, many already completed, that will stretch between the two neighborhood streets.
The project is funded from public bond money and when completed will cost $50,000. The project is a partnership between San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department and Friends of Billy Goat Hill, and the plants will continue to improve the natural habitat for bees, butterflies and birds.
This community work is the first in a series of similar projects, one of which will see new trails in Glen Canyon Park, scheduled for the upcoming months.
