Brand new San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie made a surprise appearance at the Glen Park Merchants Association New Year’s party on Wednesday, January 22 at the Park Salon at 669 Chenery Street. Every year the party rotates among the merchants. Glen Park merchants provided the delicious food and also supplied free flowing libations.
The Association had originally invited Lurie to attend the party but his schedule was already full that night so they said they’d keep the GPMA posted.
Once the party was underway, Association vice president Marian Dalere got a call from Lurie’s office saying he had a little space in his schedule, he was near the neighborhood, and could he stop by?
“They said, ‘Sorry for the surprise,’ and I said ‘It’s ok, I love surprises!’” Dalere told the Glen Park News.
The New Year’s party was held later in the month to accommodate everyone’s schedules.
Lurie arrived around 7:30, gave a short speech and then spent the rest of his time answering questions about his policies and goals for the city. Most of the questions centered on homelessness, supporting small businesses and public transit.
“Lurie took the time to really talk to people, answer their questions and engaged with them,” she said. “He wasn’t in a rush.”
Food was from Canyon Market, One Waan and La Corneta. It was a great evening, said Dalere.
She made sure to point out the numerous older and legacy business in Glen Park, the oldest being the Glen Park Station bar at 99 years! The neighborhood is also looking forward to a new French restaurant, La Cigale (The Cicada) sometime this year, a venture co-owned by Joseph Magidow and Daisy Linden.
