The Glen Park Greenway needs more volunteer waterers. Would you join us? The Greenway is an undeveloped public open space that many of us use as a green and pleasant way to walk between Glen Park village and Glen Canyon Park. Last December we planted about fifty trees along the Greenway and this month we planted over 100 shrubs.
We are adding more volunteers to our group of volunteer waterers. We are also improving the irrigation equipment so that the watering of the new plantings takes less time, is easier and more enjoyable and requires our participation less frequently.
We’ve just improved the irrigation equipment by spending about $4,500 of our Community Challenge Grant (many thanks to CCG!). Now we need to grow our group of volunteers. We have eight volunteer waterers at the moment and hope to grow this group so that there are at least twelve of us.
Here’s how it works:
We expect that each volunteer will work for about 1-2 hours about twice each month depending on the availability of each of us (vacations, travel commitments etc.).
We work in pairs and can schedule our watering with our partner at almost any time that suits us both. You can bring along a pet or children (it involves spraying water around – what could be more fun?).
We use Google Calendar to share our watering schedules and ensure that all the watering tasks are covered each week.
You can recruit a friend to join the group and be your watering partner – or you could recruit a responsible child (perhaps a child as young as 10y/o could handle it) to partner with you.
Most of the plants on the Greenway need to be watered each week. During the rainy season watering can be done less frequently depending on the weather.
We expect that the current plantings will need regular watering until the arrival of the rains in the fall of 2019 when the plants will have established themselves well enough to survive without irrigation. We don’t expect our volunteers to commit to a lifetime of watering, but we’d appreciate a few weeks’ notice if they need to drop off our roster.
So what do you think?
Will you join us?
Is there a friend that you’d like to recruit to join as your watering partner?
