Hello Friend and Supporter of the Greenway,
We are making plans for our last Work Party before (we sincerely hope) the rains arrive and we plant this year’s batch of meadow plants in the Native Meadow. So the focus of our work at this November Work Party will be the preparation the Native Meadow for planting. Our November Work Party will be on Saturday, November 5 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. We’ll have coffee at the start (many thanks to Canyon Market for providing this) and sandwiches at the end. I do hope that you can join us. We’ll meet at the end of the Chilton Avenue cul-de-sac (near 88 Chilton). Just follow the aroma of freshly brewed coffee! See you there at 9:00am.
If you’re planning to come to the work party please send me an email to tell me that you’re coming so that we know how many sandwiches to order.
Our work will be focused on the Native Meadow. Here’s a description of the main tasks that we’ll do at our Work Party:
- Weed the Native Meadow
- Complete the repairs/improvements to the irrigation systems in the Native Meadow
- Cut back the ivy 3-4’ from the southern edge of the Native Meadow planting area
- Pull up the colored flags in the planting area (these are no longer needed and will confuse the planting in December)
- Use leaf blowers to clear pine needles etc from the trail. If you have a battery-powered blower that can be used for this, please bring it with you!
- Experiment with construction and placement of burlap “sausages”/wattles
The basic tools that we’ll use will be trowels and small hand shears (“clippers”). If you have your own tools, please bring them. If you don’t have tools we will have tools that you can borrow.
For more information about the tasks or to discuss which tools we expect that you’ll need, please email me:

San Francisco’s rules in response to the pandemic no longer apply to open-air settings, and we will be working in the open air so a mask will not normally be necessary. Please bring a mask with you and, if you find yourself congregating to chat or need to work closely with any other volunteers and they feel more comfortable wearing a mask, please wear yours too.
I hope that you’ll be able to join the Work Party and look forward to working with you on Saturday November 5.
ALSO please mark your calendar for this year’s big Planting Party. It will be on Saturday December 3 starting in the morning and continuing in the afternoon. We may even need to continue on Sunday in order to get all of our wonderful plants in the ground! You can join the party from start to finish or you can come for a few hours so, if you enjoy planting, please make a note of this event starting at 9am on Saturday December 3.
Many thanks for all that you do for the Greenway!
Nicholas
