Hello Friend and Supporter of the Greenway,
I hope that you can come to our next Work Party on Saturday, August 7, from 9:00am to 12:00pm. If you’re planning to come to the work party please send me an email and let me know no later than Tuesday August 3.
Here’s a description of the main tasks that we’ll do:
Cut back ivy from trees
On every parcel there are mature trees that are threatened by ivy. We need to cut through each ivy vine that is climbing each tree and cut the ivy vines back from the base of the trunk so that there is an ivy-free space of 1-2’ around each tree. It isn’t necessary to strip the ivy off the tree trunks – just let it wither.
Place tree shelters over newly sprouted oaks
In December last year we sowed Coast Live Oak acorns in protective wire cages on the slope near the Burnside steps. There are 21 of these cages. We need to identify which cages contain successfully sprouted oaks and place tree shelters over them.
Weed around shrubs and #15 trees
The trees that we planted in December 2017 need some TLC.
Collect trash
The Greenway gets plenty of trash tossed down from the Bosworth sidewalk. If you find cleaning up the landscape to be a satisfying pursuit, we’ve got a trash-picker for you!
If you have your own tools, please bring them! If you don’t have tools we can lend them to you – just come to the top of the pedestrian ramp where Chilton Avenue meets Bosworth St. My red Subaru will be parked there at 9:00AM on Saturday morning with tools that you can use.
For more information about the tasks or to discover which tools we expect that you’ll need, please email me or telephone me (number below).
We need to follow San Francisco’s current rules in response to the pandemic. We will be working in the open air so generally need not wear masks. However, please bring a mask with you and, if you need to work closely with any other volunteers and they feel more comfortable wearing a mask, please do the same.
I hope that you’ll be able to join the Work Party and look forward to working with you on Saturday, August 7.
Many thanks for all that you do for the Greenway!
