Wow! Heat wave in The City. This one has been a really long one it seems. I took advantage of this crazy hot weather in the middle of the day one Thursday and stole away for an hour of ocean swimming at China Beach. It really took me back – as a kid growing up in San Francisco I have many fond memories of swimming at China Beach – back in the ’80s the top of the bathroom building was always packed with people slathered in baby oil sunning themselves.
I haven’t seen it like that in years, but this past week it was definitely busier, though admittedly, folks these days are a little more cautious about sun exposure. (I remember when it was a goal to get a sunburn to let it fade to a nice tan while losing some of your skin to peeling. Seems crazy to think of nowadays, kind of like my mom smoking a More cigarette while holding me as a newborn!) At any rate, it was glorious and refreshing and it took me back in time.
Now, for the real estate market – sports, festivals, and weather have had some effect on open home attendance these past couple of weeks, but the serious buyers aren’t letting any of that stop them. The inventory is up from summertime, so there is more to choose from, but we still have lower active listings than usual. It’s better than last year, but not back to usual (typically around 20 new listings in Sept. – this year we have 15 and last year it was only 13).
The interest rates are down by 2% from their high of 8% and people are starting to make moves or at least starting to think about making moves. We still have the uncertainty of the election and some people waiting for the rates to go even lower. As I always say, we know what we know now. The future is uncertain; it could be better, it could be worse. When thinking about buyer or selling, the most important thing to take into consideration is what works for your personal life situation. There is no way to perfectly time a market. So, make hay while the sun is shining!
My podcast partner Ying and I are very excited to be interviewing your very own President of the Glen Park Association, Hilary Schiraldi, for our Glen Park episode of The Bay Insider. This episode will likely be released November 13th, so stay tuned for that!
