Glen Park will soon have a new place for neighbors to make and learn art.
In the hills over Glen Canyon, artist David Martinez plans to open an atelier, a type of artists’ studio where pupils can work with a master artist, learning and making art together with other students.
Glen Park Atelier is a center for personalized art instruction. Martinez will offer workshops in painting and drawing, beginning in September. Enrollment is now open.
Martinez will use the atelier approach, an alternative to the way drawing and painting are usually taught. Atelier is pronounced ah-teal-ee-ay in French but ah-tell-ee-ay in English.
Martinez had studied illustration for many years when he discovered an atelier studio in London. The quality of students’ artwork, he recalled, rivaled the instructor’s. Martinez studied there for four years.
“Teaching is the final stage of learning,” said Martinez, explaining his personal motivation. “If I’m able to successfully communicate methods and techniques to students, that solidifies my own understanding.”
