We’ve been so busy welcoming new faces at the library and telling them how they can get a gorgeous free tote bag by participating in Summer Stride, we almost forgot to share with you all the amazing events and activities we have on tap for our community. Fortunately for us, many of you have already picked up a June events pamphlet from the sandwich board in front of our location or inside the library. We’re keeping our fingers crossed 🤞 that you’re putting those up on your refrigerator, and sharing them with friends, so you don’t miss any of these fun, free programs. And as a special treat for readers of the Glen Park Association website, here’s a sneak peek at our July events pamphlet!
Enjoy this brief rundown of some standout events we’d love to see you at this month and next and visit our website regularly to ensure you don’t miss anything, including last-minute additions.
Don’t miss these special visitors…
San Francisco’s chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers’ Younger Member Forum will get you excited about engineering with an engaging hands-on activity Thursday, July 6th starting at 4pm. Space is limited, so we recommend you stop by the library or call us at 415-355-2858 to reserve your spot.
You’ve got another chance Saturday, July 8th from 2:00-3:00 to catch a relaxing music performance of the Glen Park Duo in the library with local talents Steve Shapiro and Danny Beagle who will entertain us with a variety of classical duets on flute.
Have you ever wanted to make your own soap? Dana Fong will teach you beginning melt and pour soap making techniques Sunday, July 16th from 2:00-3:00. As you’ll work with hot wax, this program is appropriate for high school students and older. Space is limited and prior registration is recommended.
René y Familia, the three generation musical family who plays original and traditional bilingual children’s music, promises to be a great show Sunday, July 23rd from 1:45 – 2:30! Drawing on folk traditions like cumbia, ranchera and sones, René y Familia brings the party wherever it goes, while also addressing themes like socio-emotional awareness, cultural pride and solidarity.
Activities for (almost) all ages:
Looking for an easy way to start your weekend right? Every Saturday from 10:30-12:30 we invite you to join us for drop-in self-paced activities. Some highlights include bubble making, crayon rubbing, LEGO free play, and design and build engineering.
Join our knitting circle on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays between 1:00 & 2:30 or our watercoloring group 2nd & 4th Fridays anytime between 1:30 and 5:00. Note that no instructors are present, but all skills are welcome and you’re likely to meet a helpful neighbor who’s excited to help you get started.
Stretch your arts skills Thursday, July 13th between 3:30 & 5:30 where we’ll have paint and natural objects like leaves, sticks, and rocks on-hand. Or use that creative spirit to connect with friends and neighbors Thursday, July 27th between 3:30 & 5:30 when we’re providing supplies and space for you to create your own postcards.
Are you gearing up or returning from an aquatic trip? Have some old swimming gear lying around the house? Stop by the library Sunday, July 9th between 2:00 and 3:00 for our monthly themed 2nd Sunday Swap. We hope you’ll be able to find or rehome clean bathing suits, goggles, floaties, flippers, water skis, kickboards, sunscreen and any other water sports equipment.
Do you have a “bored” tween or teen at home? Send them to the library!
We’d love to welcome them to any of the above programs or have them join us for Tween Graphic Novel Club that meets 4:30-5:30 Monday, June 26th to discuss Snapdragon by Kat Leyh or Monday, July 24th to talk about Stargazing by Jen Wang. Come for discussion and snacks, even if you haven’t finished the book.
Earlier in the day Monday, July 24th from 2pm, we’re encouraging our 10-16 year olds to channel their inner chemists by creating their own slime.
Movie nights for grown-ups
One Wednesday evening a month, starting at 6:00 pm, head out to the movies in Glen Park at our 2nd Floor Flix series of films. Feel free to bring light snacks to enjoy while you watch Straight Up Wednesday, June 28th. Writer-Director James Sweeney stars as Todd, a hyper-articulate, obsessive compulsive gay twenty-something whose fear of dying alone leads him to a baffling conclusion: he might not be gay after all. And you won’t want to miss director Sasie Sealy’s Lucky Grandma Wednesday, July 19th where actor Tsai Chin (Memoirs of a Geisha, Casino Royale) finds herself in the middle of a gang war. This dark comedy about immigrant life, the vulnerabilities of aging and an unexpected friendship is sure to keep you entertained.
