On Wednesday, March 9, the southbound entrance to Interstate 280 at Bosworth Street was closed while CalTrans worked to seal up the soffit (interior space) within the freeway where four people had been sheltering. A fire subsequently broke out and the cause is still under investigation. Three people were rescued and one person tragically perished. The responsibility for determining the cause of the fire and clearing the site rests with the California Highway Patrol.
