The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has a tree removal project planned at O’Shaughnessy Boulevard near Bosworth Street that is scheduled to begin January 13, 2025. This project is a follow up to the tree removals that we did in the area last year, which was highlighted in an article written by Heather World.
The trees have been identified for removal for the purpose of safety, wildfire prevention, and reforestation of native species.
- Safety: Trees that will be removed are at risk of falling, especially during high winds or a major storm. This area has seen several trees fall independently in recent years.
- Wildfire Prevention: Defensible space is needed to prevent the spread of wildfires. Trees that are too close together can allow a wildfire to easily spread from one tree to another. Additionally, tree branches that extend over houses can provide a pathway for a wildfire to spread.
- Reforestation of California Natives: Native plants create a healthy ecosystem and provide a wildlife habitat for many birds, insects, and pollinators
The SFPUC’s Natural Resources and Land Management team will oversee the replanting of the area with native trees and plants, expected to occur sometime later this year.
This postcard contains additional information and was mailed to residences near the work zone to notify them of this project.
