BART riders may have noticed the barrier being installed around the
down escalator at Glen Park Station. According to BART’s website, the
repair is expected to take until January:

The Glen Park Association’s Transportation Committee has been in touch
with BART’s communications department. They tell us that the escalator
” experienced a significant mechanical failure in the drive system.
This requires removal of the system and a complete overhaul. Which
means the entire thing has to be taken apart. We need to get it a new
main gear which are hard to come by and are not quickly made.”

We should ask BART to install a motion sensor, to save energy when no one is on the escalator.
I’d prefer if BART bought the escalator parts from a company capable of making quality materials. This total failure nonsense, requiring months of reconstruction seems to happen to one of the GP escalators about every 4 years & they aren’t even exposed to the elements. Other stations have similar issues. The vendor they use must be a brother-in-law of some BART mucky muck.
