Tennis courts at Glen Canyon Park to be resurfaced

This has been a contentious issue, with some in the neighborhood feeling the courts are not correct and should be fixed, while others think it’s a waste of money and that the courts are fine as they are.

It appears that Rec and Park is going to re-grade them.

Here’s their email:

Hi Everyone,

As you may have heard, it has come to our attention that the slope of the tennis courts at Glen Canyon Park are not in line with current United States Tennis Association (USTA) recommendations.

Rec and Parks has worked with the design and construction management staff at the Department of Public Works to develop a plan to re-grade the courts to meet the USTA recommendations.

We anticipate the work starting on September 2nd, pending any adverse weather or other unanticipated delays.  We expect the work to be completed by the beginning of January, barring other unforeseen delays.  It is possible that they will be done before this time, I will notify everyone when the work is done.

All construction vehicle access will be directly from the Elk Street edge of the park, from the new “drop-off area,” and access the courts from there, keeping the children’s play area, fields, and recreation center open.

The sidewalk on the west side of Elk Street near the tennis courts and at least a portion of the “drop off zone” will be affected and closed at times.  Please plan accordingly.  Entrances from Elk Street above the tennis courts and adjacent to the ball fields will remain open, in addition to entrances from Bosworth and others. Signage will be installed to direct users to other nearby entrances.

As the courts will not be in use during these repairs, please consider using other public courts available for use.   You can find out about all of our tennis courts using this link:

and search under “tennis courts” to find the one most convenient for you.

We apologize for this incontinence but hope to have it re-opened soon.
