Bird & Beckett doings: jazz, Sufi singing, poetry, readings

In a couple of weeks, we’ve got Pakistani Sufi singer Sukhawat Ali Khan (7/10) and then pan-Arabic music from Faisal Zedan, Husain Resan and Younes El-Makboul (7/17).

But you know we’re sweet on the literary stuff and America’s classical music, a.k.a., jazz… so here’s what we’ve got in the short-term (in case you’re not in the habit of simply checking our website at

Sun., 6/26
2 pm – PUS Theatre Co. presents Turk Muller previewing material for a new piece built on the writings of Richard Hugo — poet of the barroom, the open road, and the river; poetry laced through with mystery, sadness and regret.
4:30 pm: The Jim Grantham Quartet – we’ve only heard him (fabulously) as a sideman here in the past. Today, his own working quartet with Spencer Allen (piano); Jim Neighbor (bass); Greg German (drums).

Thurs. 6/30:
7:00 pm – Neeli Cherkovski reads from his new book, “From the Middle Woods” — a set of poems spun out from the Confucian odes. Gary Gach, noted zen writer and practitioner, will join him in conversation.

Fri. 7/1:
5:30 pm – Don Prell’s Seabop Ensemble. If you don’t know, find out!

Sun. 7/3:
3:00 pm – Poet Nicholas Karavatos & electronica guitarist Jeff Kelley travel through with their “Intermedia Spoken Word Performance”
4:30 pm – The Buena Vista Jazz Band – a terrific “trad” ensemble to celebrate the 4th a day early! With Chris Bradley, Don Neely and Jim Hunt on cornet, clarinet and trombone, respectively; plus Duncan James on guitar; Larry O’Leno on piano; Michael Kenny on bass; and Steve Apple on drums.

5:30 pm – The Jimmy Ryan Quintet with Henry Hung, Danny Grewen, Scott Foster & Bishu Chatterjee

Sun., 7/10:
2:00 pm – “Ten Years That Shook San Francisco” — a book event w/editor Chris Carlsson and contributors Pam Peirce, Andrew Lam and Mary Jean Robertson.
